The Yorkshire Music Club welcomes children and young people with any degree of hearing loss to come together to play music. This unique group is open to any deaf or hard of hearing children and their siblings, whether they already play an instrument or are complete beginners.
In 2011, Music and the Deaf launched one of the most ambitious music programmes for deaf and hard of hearing children ever seen in the UK: a ‘National Deaf Youth Orchestra’. This project established ensembles across England which gave deaf and hard of hearing young people the opportunity to learn an instrument and perform to a high standard alongside their peers. The Yorkshire Music Club is a legacy of this project, and has helped change perceptions of what children with a hearing loss can achieve in music.
The Yorkshire Music Club provides a creative and supportive environment where young people who face similar challenges can come together, socialise with one another, and develop their musical talent!
Despite widespread misconceptions, the reality is that deaf children can enjoy and excel in music making to the same extent as their peers, and that’s what the Yorkshire Music Club is all about.
“It is great fun and a chance to meet up with other deaf children and have fun playing music together,” says Keir, age 11, Yorkshire Music Club member.
In order to cover costs, there is a small charge of £6 per session, and if you have more than one child attending, the second can attend for half price. Please get in touch with us if you would like to get involved, and we look forward to seeing you there!
Yorkshire Music Club sessions are held on Saturdays from 2-4pm at the Music and the Deaf offices in Halifax. Spring/Summer 2017 sessions have now finished, but if you would like to get involved when the Club starts back in September then please let us know!
