Signed Song

Signed Song has become very popular in the last few years and many schools have signing choirs. Since 2007 Music and the Deaf has been very involved in Sing Up – the National Singing Initiative – in England and very proud to be one of only 8 Sing Up Flagship Organisations.

We have run lots of workshops and training events around the country and created various signed songs videos to encourage people. With support from Sing Up we have trained several new leaders who also act as Regional Co-ordinators to develop both signed song skills and choirs.

Starting in 2011 we will be creating a National Signed Song Choir. More information about this soon.

In Nov 2010 the Jersey Eisteddfod was the first music festival in the UK to have a signing choir class. Paul Whittaker OBE was the adjudicator and choirs from Chester, Liverpool and Jersey took part. Click here to see this historic event.

“Thank you so much for such a fantastic day on Wednesday. It was such an amazing feeling hearing the kids sing. We have been trying for so long to get them to do it and finally their barrier is slowly being broken down. It was another inspirational day from which I took lots and I am sure this is the same for the students.”

“The team were absolutely brilliant and all the kids got involved and were really engaged. Feedback from staff was really positive too and everyone has been asking me when MATD are coming back!”
